History
The Southern Highlands was originally inhabited by the Walbanga and Wandandians tribes for many thousands of years. In the early 19th Century, Cedar Cutters came in search of timber, followed by settlers with their cattle and homesteads. In the 1860's, railway arrived in the Southern Highlands; bringing with it tourists enjoying a glimpse of country life and a respite from the cities. Little has changed today, with vineyards and olive groves dotted among the English-style gardens, rolling farming land and historic townships.
